‘The Northman’ Arrives at the Box Office With a $23.5 Million Worldwide Opening

The latest film from The Witch and The Lighthouse director Robert Eggers, Viking epic The Northman is now playing in theaters, and opening weekend box office numbers are in.

The Northman is now playing in 3,234 theaters here in the United States, where it made $12 million this past weekend. The international number sits close by at $11,528,000.

Worldwide, The Northman has pulled in $23,528,000 at the box office.

That’s a pretty strong number for an arthouse action film such as this one, but the problem here is that Focus Features spent far more on The Northman than one might have expected them to. Reportedly, the film’s production budget was somewhere in the $70-90 million range, all but ensuring that The Northman won’t be able to make that money back in theaters.

So here we have a situation where a movie is making a respectable stand at the box office, but it’s just not enough given the massive amount of money it took to get that vision onto the screen. The real winners here are the fans, who get another Robert Eggers movie at a much larger scale than ever before. For Eggers, his biggest worldwide total thus far is horror movie debut The Witch, which scared up $40 million in 2015. Follow-up movie The Lighthouse pulled in just $18 million in 2019, putting The Northman right between the two at the moment.

All of it creates a detailed and rich tapestry of Viking life.” Meagan adds, “The beating heart of The Northman is a familiar tale of revenge, but in Eggers’ hands, it’s at least deeply engrossing.”
