Sam Raimi brings horror to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with brand new Phase 4 movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, a spooky trip through the Multiverse that allows Raimi to channel the spirit of his early horror films. Not surprisingly, the film is another massive hit for Marvel/Disney, scaring up Raimi’s biggest opening weekend box office to date.
Domestically, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness opened in 4,534 theaters over the weekend, pulling in $185 million thus far here in the United States alone.
Internationally, Doctor Strange’s return to the big screen pulled in an additional $265,000,000, giving the sequel a worldwide box office take (so far) of a whopping $450 million.
This gives Raimi’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness the highest-grossing opening weekend of 2022, as well as the sixth biggest global opening weekend of all time.
Back in 2016, Scott Derrickson’s Doctor Strange had an $85 million domestic opening weekend, so it’s safe to say the character has only gotten more popular the more he’s been woven into the fabric of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Raimi’s sequel comes in the wake of Benedict Cumberbatch‘s appearances in Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: No Way Home.
What’s next for Sam Raimi? Here’s hoping for more horror real soon!
In Marvel’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the MCU unlocks the Multiverse and pushes its boundaries further than ever before. Journey into the unknown with Doctor Strange, who, with the help of mystical allies both old and new, traverses the mind-bending and dangerous alternate realities of the Multiverse to confront a mysterious new adversary.
Multiverse of Madness stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, with Michael Stühlbarg, and Rachel McAdams.
Meagan writes in her review for BD, “Raimi does surprise by testing the limits of the PG-13 rating in places. But as thrilling as seeing Strange encounter all types of horror as he races through set pieces can be, this sequel is less interested in forging new ground than repeating the same story and character beats from other MCU movies. It’s an entertaining and spooky romp and not much else. That’s okay. Especially if it brings more horror to the MCU.”
