Originally announced in 2018, the mysterious J.J. Abrams series “Demimonde” had been taking shape at HBO this year, but alas, we’ve learned that the project is no longer happening.
Deadline reports this week that “Demimonde” will not be moving forward at HBO due to “budget issues.” Reportedly, the cost of the series skyrocketed into the “mid-$200 million range,” with Abrams and his team unwilling to budge or lower the budget for HBO.
“Demimonde” had been in early pre-production prior to being axed by HBO. Danielle Deadwyler (The Harder They Fall) had been set to the lead the cast of the ambitious series.
“The series focuses on Olive Reed (Deadwyler), a woman who is torn away from her husband and daughter in a brutal scientific accident. She is forced to unravel a conspiracy to reunite with her family, now lost to a dark, distant other world.”
Deadline reports, “The final stages of the Demimonde conversations were held against the background of a larger reevaluation of the massive deal Abrams’ Bad Robot has at Warner Bros for film, TV, gaming and digital content as the new Warner Bros. Discovery is scrutinizing every aspect of the assets they took over when the merger was completed in April.”
Kira Snyder (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) and Rand Ravich & Far Shariat (“Life”) were to serve as co-showrunners and exec producers, with Abrams writing and directing for Bad Robot.
