7 of the Coolest Upcoming Horror Video Games to Keep On Your Radar

Horror is one of those genres that is pretty much a surefire hit in any medium of entertainment. We’re living in unprecedented times with horror movies topping the box office and horror television series dominating streaming, and we’re also entering another golden age of horror video games. That last one is super exciting because a genre that was once known mostly for survival horror experiences like Resident Evil and Silent Hill is now a cornucopia for all types of experiences to get your spooky fix.

With recent homerun releases such as The Quarry and Evil Dead: The Game, there is no shortage of experiences still on the way for horror lovers to anticipate.

Here’s a look at some of the coolest horror games to keep on your radar.

Resident Evil 4 – Release Date: March 24, 2023

The original Resident Evil 4 is a bonafide masterpiece. The 2005 game is still just as fun to play today as it was nearly two decades ago (yeah it’s really that old), so it’s going to be a monumental task to improve on perfection. But Capcom seems up to the task, bringing back the same team that did the stellar Resident Evil 2 remake. And with new next-gen technology available, there is no doubt in my mind that Capcom could actually pull this off and give fans a whole new way to experience Resident Evil 4.

Killer Klowns from Outer space – Release Date: TBA 2023

Coming out of left field when it was announced last month, Killer Klowns from Outer Space is one of the most prime candidates to receive a video game adaptation. Based on one of the best horror movies to come out of the 80s, Killer Klowns looks to shake up the asymmetrical horror game formula by increasing the player counts from the common 1v4 standard to an experimental 3v7 format having 3 players play the titular maniacs and 7 players as their prey. Teravision Games is heading up development on this one and even though they seem fairly new they have Randy Greenback (director of the Friday the 13th game) on their team and the full blessing of the Chiodo Brothers.

Hell, they’re even bringing back that infectious theme song from the movie.

The Outlast Trials – TBA 2022

Remember Outlast? One of the first horror experiences in the PS4 generation of gaming, Outlast pitted players in a mysterious asylum filled with man made horrors and bridged a gap between first person and found footage horror. Well, just in time for the series’ 10th anniversary, the franchise is set to make a return with the wildly ambitious title The Outlast Trials. A spin-off set during the Cold War, the game looks to take inspiration from the likes of Bioshock and the Saw franchise. Players will take on the roles of test subjects that are forced to work together to survive a gauntlet of death traps. Honestly, since Konami doesn’t look to be returning to their Saw video games anytime soon, The Outlast Trials looks like it could satisfy that fix.

The Callisto Protocol – Release Date: December 2, 2022

From Glen Schofield, one of the creators of Dead Space, comes a space-horror game that aims to bring back the same amount of terror to next-gen hardware. The Callisto Protocol tells the story of Jacob Lee (played by Josh Duhamel) as he navigates a horrifying alien invasion on the prison colony of Black Iron. What we’ve seen of the game so far promises to be an insanely brutal, terrifying space-horror experience featuring some of the goriest deaths to ever happen in video games. The art direction is also exceptional, providing a sense of dread and misery that’s lost in a lot of horror games today. As a huge fan of the original Dead Space, I can’t wait for this one.

(Note: Dead Space is also set to receive a Next-Gen remake in 2023 which is some very weird timing.)

Alan Wake II – Release Date: TBA 2023

Hey did you know that Remedy is finally making a sequel to their hit 2010 game Alan Wake? Well they are. The original game followed author Alan Wake as he traveled to Bright Falls, Washington and began to experience events from his novel coming to life. This highly anticipated sequel is being described as a full blown survival horror game as opposed to an action game with horror elements like the first one. After being confirmed to take place in the same universe as Control, who knows what madness will happen to Alan this time around.

Redfall – Release Date: TBA 2023

From Arkane Studios, the masterminds behind Dishonored, Prey, and last year’s exceptional Deathloop, comes a co-op shooter about the bloodsucking undead. After the titular town of Redfall, Massachusetts is overrun with vampires because of a failed science experiment, players will take up arms as would-be vampire slayers as they fight to survive in a world gone to hell. Known for their top-notch level design, Arkane Studios has the talent to deliver on the promising premise of a co-op vampire shooter set in a rich environment. Sharpen those stakes and get a jug of holy water ready, because this one sounds like a blast.

Gotham Knights – Release Date: October 21, 2023

Okay hear me out on this one. Gotham Knights follows the characters of Nightwing, Batgirl, Red Hood and Robin as they fight to protect Gotham City in the wake of Batman’s death. Unbeknownst to them the Court of Owls, an illuminati-inspired cult that secretly runs Gotham, is planning to strike now that the opportunity arises. Gotham Knights looks to be inspired by Scott Snyder’s legendary Batman run in the comics including the arc The Court of Owls. A horror writer himself, Snyder injected a healthy dose of horror influence during his run on DC Comics’ best-selling title. Gotham Knights has that same horror influence and makes the Court the game’s main antagonists. If it’s even 10% of what the comic was, horror fans are in for an unexpected treat.
