After crushing its Kickstarter the first day it launched, we haven’t heard much of Outerminds’ Turbo Kid video game adaptation. Thankfully, that changes next week, as the BMX-powered pixel-art metroidvania will have a demo launch on Steam for you to try out.
The Kickstarter for Turbo Kid ended up raising over $132,000 USD thanks to 1936 backers. That total also met several of the campaign’s stretch goals, including the ability to play as Apple (who was played in the 2015 film by Laurence Leboeuf).
Set between the end of the 2015 film and the upcoming sequel, Turbo Kid features a brand-new story that sees The Kid journey across the Wasteland in search of hope. You’ve also got to take care of “scoundrels and creeps” along the way to survive. That of course involves over-the-top gore rendered in glorious pixel-art and “painstakingly precise” ragdoll physics. Seeins as this is a metroidvania, you’ll be collecting new power-ups and weapons as you make your journey through the five sprawling levels on your “height of human-powered transport technology” known as your bike. The game’s non-linear narrative allows you to complete the game in whichever order you see fit, and make decisions that will change the outcome.
Currently, Outerminds’ Turbo Kid game is being developed for PC and Nintendo Switch. No release date has been announced.
Crashing has its consequences, but you can always get back up again to crash some more. You don't even have to worry about your bike breaking!
