After weeks of behind the scenes drama that dominated the discourse, director Olivia Wilde‘s psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling was released into theaters over the weekend, and the 1950s-set movie dominated the box office in the #1 spot. The film, starring Florence Pugh and Harry Styles, pulled in $19.2 million at the domestic box office in its opening weekend.
Internationally, Wilde’s Don’t Worry Darling added another $10.8 million to its total, with the film’s worldwide box office total now currently sitting pretty at $30 million.
The reported production budget for Don’t Worry Darling was $35 million, so it’s still got a ways to go before it recoups marketing costs and starts seeing some profits. The general rule of thumb is that a movie has to make 3x its production budget before ultimately becoming profitable, so Warner Bros. no doubt hopes this one eventually reaches $100 million.
Critics and general audiences seem to be split on this one, with Don’t Worry Darling‘s Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score at 79% and its Tomatometer Score currently at just 38%.
Meagan wrote in her review for BD, “Inventive designs and style bolster Florence Pugh’s infectious charms as yet another beleaguered woman trapped in an unsupportive relationship. It’s a dazzling enough affair while it lasts, but it’s mostly forgettable.”
In the film, “Alice (Florence Pugh) and Jack Chambers (Harry Styles) are lucky to be living in Victory, the experimental company town housing the men who work for the top-secret Victory Project and their families. Life is perfect, with every resident’s needs met by the company. All they ask in return is unquestioning commitment to the Victory cause. But when cracks in her idyllic life begin to appear, exposing flashes of something much more sinister lurking beneath the attractive façade, Alice can’t help questioning what they’re doing in Victory, and why. Just how much is Alice willing to lose to expose what’s really going on in paradise?”
Don’t Worry Darling is directed by Olivia Wilde and produced by Wilde, Katie Silberman, Miri Yoon and Roy Lee. The screenplay is by Silberman, from a story by Carey Van Dyke & Shane Van Dyke and Silberman. The executive producers are Richard Brener, Celia Khong, Alex G. Scott, Catherine Hardwicke, Carey Van Dyke and Shane Van Dyke. A New Line Cinema presentation of a Vertigo Entertainment Production of an Olivia Wilde film, Don’t Worry Darling will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures and is set to open in theaters internationally beginning 21 September 2022 and in North America on September 23, 2022.
