“Chucky” Season 2 Review – Episode 3 Showcases Delightfully Unhinged New Sides of the Killer Doll

The last episode of Don Mancini‘s “Chucky” might’ve ended with the tease of returning franchise players, but “Hail Mary” jumps right back into the increasingly tricky situation at the Catholic reformatory school. While that means we’ll have to wait another week for a potential Glen and Glenda reunion, episode three makes that wait painless with engaging character development that includes Chucky himself.

The clock is ticking for Jake Wheeler (Zackary Arthur); Father Bryce (Devon Sawa) knows he has the Good Guy doll and gives him finite time to return it to his office before punishment ensues. Jake, Lexy (Alyvia Alyn Lind), Devon (Bjorgvin Arnarson), and Lexy’s roommate Nadine (Bella Higginbotham) band together to coax intel out of their captive doll. Meanwhile, Jake and Devon must contend with hiding their relationship and disagreements over Chucky, which lands them in Father Bryce’s crosshairs. It leaves Lexy alone to deal with a nasty bully situation and an increasingly precarious drug problem.

“Hail Mary” juggles its character conflicts with ease as it quickly complicates their lives beyond their ongoing Chucky predicament. Lexy’s heartbreaking storyline stands out the most in this episode; Jake and Devon’s relationship turmoil and their attempts to hide it means they’re unaware that their friend is rapidly losing her careful sense of control. Enter Nadine, an oddball charmer whose quirks belie an emotional intelligence. Nadine remains an enigma but is precious all the same. Higginbotham makes fast work of endearing Nadine to viewers.

Tempering the drama this episode is our favorite killer doll. “Hail Mary” employs Chucky as the highly amusing comedic relief. The tactics the teens use to force Chucky’s cooperation results in an unhinged riff on A Clockwork Orange. Once again, a love of the horror genre underpins this series, and that makes for amusing scenarios and wry jokes. Chucky finds playful new ways to destroy a human body, and “Chucky” finds playful new ways to explore various facets of its eponymous killer.

“Hail Mary” further entrenches the young leads in conflicts stemming from their new surroundings, adding new layers to compound their problems. Jake, Lexy, and Devon must constantly hide who they are from the judgmental eyes of grownups, which makes evading Chucky’s looming threat even more difficult. Chucky, for his part, brings the slasher mayhem that we love so much and in surprising ways. All of it is handled so well that we hardly have a chance to wonder what Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly) and Nica (Fiona Dourif) are up to now.

Only three episodes in, and the wild yet creative explorations of Chucky so far instill exciting promise of what’s ahead. We’re still as in the dark as Jake about Chucky’s grand designs, but what glimpses we get here hint at limitless possibilities. Chucky has been very, very busy in the year since season one’s events. Who knows what his plans entail, but the doll’s appearances in “Hail Mary” ensure that discovering what they are will be an absolute delight. There’s a clear sense that the entire cast and crew are having a ball this season, and it’s infectious.

Watch new episodes of “Chucky” on Wednesdays at 9/8c on SYFY and USA Network.
