Released in 2017 in the wake of the Brendan Fraser movies, the Tom Cruise-starring The Mummy was intended to kick-start Universal’s “Dark Universe,” but we all know how that worked out. The film’s under-performance at the box office spelled the swift end of the planned universe, and we haven’t heard a peep about any Mummy-related projects since.
But if he had his way, Luca Guadagnino (Suspiria, Bones & All) would make his own version of The Mummy. It’s something he just mused aloud about in a new chat with Collider.
Guadagnino told the outlet when they asked him which classic horror movie he’d love to put his own spin on, “I think it would be amazing to do something about The Mummy.”
“It’s a rotten body in rotten bandages, so what’s inside is [as] interesting as what’s outside,” Guadagnino continues. “It should be very scary and very, very terminal. It should be a little movie but with a lot of depth and very scary.” All modern day Mummy movies have leaned more into action than horror, so this would be more in line with the original classics.
He also notes, “There is a Joe Dante Mummy that never happened that I feel so bad about because Joe is such a master and I am sure he would have made something incredible.”
