‘The Menu’ Gobbles Up $15 Million Worldwide in Debut Weekend

Anya Taylor-Joy stars alongside Ralph Fiennes and Nicholas Hoult in The Menu, a film from director Mark Mylod (“Succession”) that was released in theaters over the weekend.

Released into 3,211 theaters, The Menu ate up $9 million domestically in its debut weekend, with the darkly comedic horror movie debuting to $15.2 million at the worldwide box office.

The Menu gave Searchlight Pictures its biggest opening weekend since Slumdog Millionaire (’08), and it’s currently #2 on the domestic charts behind Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Meagan wrote in her review for Bloody Disgusting, “Even with bursts of shocking violence, there’s a restraint to the horror and madness. The wit, humor, style, and performances ultimately serve tasty morsels worth savoring. The pacing is as methodical as Chef Slowik’s meal, which means it has a way of dragging on a bit too long without fully satiating.”

The film, penned by Will Tracy and Seth Reiss, “is a darkly comedic psychological thriller set in the world of eccentric culinary culture, centering on a young couple who visit an exclusive restaurant on a remote island where an acclaimed chef has prepared a lavish tasting menu. Taylor-Joy will play one half of the couple. Fiennes is playing the chef.”

The cast also includes Hong Chau, Janet McTeer, Judith Light, Reed Birney, Paul Adelstein, Aimee Carrero, Arturo Castro, Mark St. Cyr, Rob Yang, and John Leguizamo.

Adam McKay (The Big Short) is producing The Menu for Searchlight.

The Menu had originally been set to star Emma Stone and Ralph Fiennes, with Alexander Payne attached to direct, but both Stone and Payne ultimately left due to scheduling conflicts.
