With Mortal Kombat II turning the big 3-0 next year (after the original Mortal Kombat turned 30 earlier this year), it’s surprising that we haven’t had a neat find like this before. But hey, beggars can’t be choosers. Per Event Hubs, the source code for the 1993 arcade hit has found its way onto the internet, and fans have begun documenting the various differences and cut content from the source code and the final version of Mortal Kombat II.
Twitter users like Pegasus Kid have been comparing and contrasting the differences in the Mortal Kombat II source code, which range from cut animations and moves to unfinished Fatalities. For example, Johnny Cage originally had his knee attack from the first game in the sequel, but also had the word “OTOMIX” on his pants. Of course, the big find is that Cage had an unfinished Fatality where he would punch his fist through his opponent’s head. Pegasus Kid ended up creating a mockup of the scrapped Fatality:
#22 Made this mockup in my MK Engine for ParallaxMKChile to show off.
This could've been Johnny Cage's Fatality! pic.twitter.com/aAuX8x707A

Other goodies include an altered intro cutscene that had Shao Kahn in front of the Outworld portal instead of the generic background in the final version of the game. Kahn also had a scrapped Fatality where he would use a portal to punch his opponent with a gigantic fist and crushing them. Reptile and Jax also had air versions of their respective Acid Spit and Energy Wave moves, and Liu Kang and Kung Lao had what appeared to be scrapped combo punches.
