Huge, exciting news this morning as Cinedigm and Bloody Disgusting are together booting up the highly anticipated four-part docuseries RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop as a SCREAMBOX Original. First announced by Deadline this morning, it will premiere exclusively on our SCREAMBOX streaming service, as well as on Digital/VOD early next year.
Five years in the making, RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop takes an in-depth look into the creation of the groundbreaking franchise and features new interviews with cast and crew, including Hollywood icons such as Peter Weller, Diane Robin, Ronny Cox, Nancy Allen, Ray Wise, director Paul Verhoeven & more.
Part man. Part machine. All cop. RoboCop burst onto the scene in the late 1980s as the cinematic landscape began to shift. Robots and artificial intelligence were making their way into the public consciousness and their stories captured the world’s imagination. This popularity helped the franchise gross over $100 million in box office, while inspiring a pair of sequels as well as an animated television series and merchandise.
Hailed as “one of the best action movies of the 1980s” by Collider, RoboCop pushed boundaries as a thriller with shots of brutality and torture in the opening scene. The dystopian satire came to life by Ed Neumeier while working on the set of Blade Runner with Rob Bottin (The Fog, The Thing) handling the special effects which included practical effects, the violent gore and the infamous RoboCop costume.
Produced by Gary Smart, an award-winning filmmaker known for the Dark Ditties series and You’re So Cool, Brewster! The Story of Fright, the doc is directed by Chris Griffiths and Eastwood Allen who previously collaborated with Smart on Pennywise: The Story of IT. The docu-series looks back at the groundbreaking sci-fi franchise through the eyes of those who created it. RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop shows the franchise’s impact on the action and science fiction genres, blazing a trail alongside The Terminator, into the technologically driven cinema scape we see today. That impact is still being felt, as the 2014 remake of RoboCop grossed over $240 million at the box office.
“RoboCop is not only a technological icon but a film that pushed boundaries with its practical effects and excessively violent gore,” said Brad Miska, Managing Director of Bloody Disgusting. “Much of what we see on screen today can be credited to the innovative minds of the 70s and 80s. We’re thrilled fans will finally be able to see the story behind it RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop on SCREAMBOX next year.”
Co-director Eastwood Allen states “We’ve crafted something together to incorporate visuals and sound in an effort to immerse viewers into the world of 80s filmmaking and offer something completely unique to the ‘making of’ format.” Co-director Chris Griffiths, also adds “as a fan of RoboCop for the past 30 years, this project has been a labor of love for me and I can’t wait to share this unique project with the fans, especially those who have stood by us all these years.”
The series was written by Allen, Griffiths and Smart and produced by Smart, Michael Perez & Hank Starrs, with John Cashin, Gary Collins, Ben KB Ng, Fuad Omar, Aleksandar Smiljanic, Sean Tiedeman and Laurence Gornall acting as Executive Producers. RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop was composed by Sean Schafer Hennessy who previously worked on the horror documentary Pennywise: The Story of IT & Scream: The Inside Story.
The deal was negotiated by Brandon Hill, Director of Acquisitions, on behalf of Cinedigm and Laurence Gornall on behalf of Unannounced Film Company.
Producer Gary Smart adds: “We are honored to be working with Cinedigm and SCREAMBOX again. We genuinely feel that they can give this mammoth of a project the release it deserves.”
The series joins SCREAMBOX’s growing library of unique horror content, including Terrifier 2, Deep Fear, Pennywise: The Story of IT, All Jacked Up and Full of Worms, Masters of Horror, 13 Nights of Elvira, PussyCake, When the Screaming Starts, Toxic Crusaders, Satan’s Little Helper Uncut, Vietnamese Horror Story.
