New ‘Resident Evil 4’ Remake Details Revealed, Including New Enemies, Gameplay Changes

March isn’t that far away, and Capcom has begun the buzz for the upcoming Resident Evil 4 remake. Game Informer snagged the first big preview for the upcoming entry, and with it, several bits of info regarding the additions (and removals) made to the game.

For starters, those who thought the quick-time events in the original version were distracting? They’re gone. Another change made to the gameplay involves knives. Leon’s trusty melee weapon will now have limited durability, and will break after a certain amount of use. Luckily, you can store multiple knives in your inventory.

As for the additions, Capcom has added new sidequests to Resident Evil 4 remake. These range from finding snake carcasses to hunting down a specific enemies. You can obtain these side-quests through blue flyers found throughout the world, which can then be turned in for rewards at the Merchant’s shop. Speaking of blue, the Blue Medallion sidequest is here again.

If you thought Ashley having a lifebar in the original version was a bit of a pain, you’ll be pleased to know that the developers wanted to make Ashley in the remake “feel more like a natural companion and less like a second health bar to babysit.” As a result, Ashley will now have “downed states” if she takes too much damage, requiring the player to revive her. If, however, she’s damaged while in a downed state, she will die. The commands you can issue to Ashley have been expanded, as well, with the player able to send her through crawlspaces to open locked doors, for example. However, she will no longer hide, as according to co-director Kazunori Kadoi, having Ashley hide “defeats the purpose of having her with you”.

New enemies will also be present in the RE4 remake. One such enemy Game Informer encountered was a Ganado wearing the decapitated head of a bull like a mask, and carrying huge hammer. Capcom teased that there will be more foes in store for the player in the remake.

Lastly, the controls for the remake remain largely the same as the ones found in Capcom’s Resident Evil 2 remake. There will, however, be six optional control schemes, including one that mimics the original game’s configuration.

Resident Evil 4 arrives March 24, 2023 for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series.
