“Stranger Things” Final Season Has Been Paused While Writers Fight for Fair Wages

The creators of Netflix’s hit series “Stranger Things,” the Duffer Brothers have released a statement this week regarding the status of the show’s upcoming fifth and final season.

Production on “Stranger Things 5” had been set to begin very soon.

They write, “Writing does not stop when filming begins. While we’re excited to start production with our amazing cast and crew, it is not possible during this strike. We hope a fair deal is reached soon so we can all get back to work. Until then — over and out. #wgastrong.”

The gist of the WGA strike, which began earlier this week, is that writers in Hollywood are asking for fair wages. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, meanwhile, is pushing back against the extremely reasonable requests, bringing Hollywood to a standstill. And at this time, nobody has any idea how long it will take to reach a necessary resolution.

You can learn more about the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike here.

From Wikipedia, “The main focus point in the labor dispute is the residuals from streaming media; the WGA claims that AMPTP’s share of such residuals has cut much of writers’ average incomes compared to a decade ago. Writers also wanted artificial intelligence such as ChatGPT to be used only as a tool that can help research or facilitate script ideas and not be used as tools to replace them. The WGA estimated that its proposals would yield to writers about $429 million a year, whereas the AMPTP’s offer would yield $86 million.”
