The Original ‘Jurassic Park’ Just Made $1.7 Million in Theaters for 30th Anniversary 3D Release

Steven Spielberg’s classic summer blockbuster Jurassic Park celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, and the film just returned to the big screen over the weekend.

In 1,224 theaters nationwide, Jurassic Park attacked the big screen in RealD 3D beginning Friday, August 25, scaring up $1.7 million for Universal between Friday and Sunday.

Yes, a 30 year old movie that’s been widely available to watch at home for decades just made nearly $2 million in theaters. That’s the enduring power of Jurassic Park for ya.

Jurassic Park was originally released in theaters on June 11, 1993, the film of course based on Michael Crichton’s same-titled novel. The dinosaur epic gobbled up nearly $1 billion in theaters at the time, spawning a series of sequels including the 2022 film Jurassic World Dominion.

It was back in 2013 that Jurassic Park was originally upgraded to 3D, twenty years after the film’s original release. The 3D screenings in 2013 brought in a whopping $18 million.

Officially, Jurassic Park is now a billion dollar box office hit.

“Featuring Academy Award®-winning visual effects and groundbreaking filmmaking that has been hailed as “a triumph of special effects artistry” (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times), this epic film is sheer movie-making magic that was 65 million years in the making.

“Jurassic Park takes you to an amazing theme park on a remote island where dinosaurs once again roam the earth and five people must battle to survive among the prehistoric predators. Starring Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum and Richard Attenborough, discover the breathtaking adventure you will want to experience again and again.”
