Realms Deep 2023 Unveils a Host of New Games, Updates and More [Video]

3D Realms unveiled a whack of new titles at their Realms Deep 2023 showcase over the weekend, as well as offering up updates for previously-announced games. That of course includes a whack of new trailers to ogle, so here’s a small rundown of the titles featured during the 4-hour show (which you can rewatch here). The showcase is also coinciding with the Realms Deep 2023 Steam sale for several 3D Realms titles, which is on now until October 3rd.

In Harrison’s preview (and in the new trailer!) for Atmos Games’ action-adventure shooter Twisted Tower, he likened the game to “an ultra-violent cross between BioShock, Willy Wonka & Disneyland”. And it’s easy to see why. You play as Tiny, who has received a Velvet Ticket to participate in the world-famous game show, The Twisted Tower, hosted by the billionaire toy maker, Mr. Twister. Hoping to use the $10,000,000 prize and fame to win his childhood sweetheart Charlotte’s hand in marriage, Tiny soon discovers that the game show has a darker side to it.

The previously-announced Phantom Fury made an appearance this year with a new trailer and a new playable demo. Utilizing the Quake engine this time around, Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison utilizes her arsenal and new bionic arm to carve through treacherous soldiers and vile mutants in order to secure a highly dangerous artifact, the legendary Demon Core.

Meanwhile, Phantom Fury‘s predecessor Iron Fury also dropped in with news that its long-awaited expansion Aftershock is set to arrive on October 2nd. The story for Aftershock sees protagonist Shelly Harrison having finally defeated Heskel in the original game, and is in the process of celebrating at a local bar. Of course, that doesn’t last long as Heskel shows up again, and Shelly must now gear up and finish him off.

Originally starting out as a Total Conversion for Doom, Good Karma’s Divine Frequency is now its own game. Taking place in a dystopian world where dreams and reality collides, this FPS RPG has you diving into a deep and surreal tale of cosmic horror as you wield a variety of tools from forgotten experimental weapons to your very own fists. The devs cite Blood, System Shock 2, Darkest Dungeon, and Bloodborne as inspiration, so you know this one’s good to keep on your radar.

Long in Early Access, KillPixel’s WRATH: Aeon of Ruin will finally be leaving the service and launching in full on February 27th, 2024. You are Outlander. Once adrift upon the Ageless Sea, you now find yourself on the shores of a dying world. From the consuming darkness emerges a figure cloaked in white, the Shepherd of Wayward Souls, who burdens you with the task of hunting down the remaining Guardians of the Old World.

Kingpin Reloaded also showed up with a new trailer and a December 5th release date. Slipgate Ironworks’ remaster of the 1999 Interplay cult classic will feature re-balanced and revamped gameplay, a new quest system, ultrawide and 4K support, “Classic” and “Enhanced” modes and more.

CULTIC: Interlude is a new update for Jasozz Games’ throwback horror shooter CULTIC, bringing with it a new story map, which has you experience some of the events that transpired between Chapter 1 and Chapter 2. Described as being “a bit of a twist” on CULTIC‘s gameplay formula, Interlude will allow players to experience some of the new things coming in Chapter Two, including new weapons, enemies and features.

The Hexen-inspired GRAVEN will also be exiting Early Access on Steam in the new year, with a release date of January 23, 2024. The team is still working to get GRAVEN out on consoles, though it won’t be ready in time for that January release. The new content for the 1.0 release includes new weapons and tools, new enemies, and plenty of new story content.

Pet Project Games’ Ripout has been mentioned several times by us in the past, but actually hasn’t been released. That all changes on October 24, when the co-op sci-fi horror FPS enters Early Access on Steam. According to the devs, the game is almost fully-featured and playable from start to end. However, they’ve chosen to go the early access route in order to “solicit direct feedback from the community and bring the game to the highest possible level.”

Released last year, Bounding Box Software’s Prodeus will be also be getting an expansion in The Elder Veil. The new expansion introduces new weapons such as a spear, a new grappling hook item, and of course a new campaign. The trailer hints at a more elaborate-looking environment this time around, as opposed to the dark and gritty metal corridors of the original game.

Trunka’s melding of RPG mechanics and first-person shooters in Devilated also got some love during the showcase with its new “Great Earl of Hell” update. Still in Early Access, Devilated now has revamped gameplay with the update, as well as new combat manoeuvrers, actions, and weapons. The update also expands upon the lore and vibe of the game with new story cutscenes. As a bonus, we get a new interview video with Gianni Matragrano, who voices several characters in Devilated.
