After the bizarre visual feast that was Ebb Software’s Scorn, those looking for another hit of visual weirdness would be wise to keep an eye on Ares Dragonis (creator of The Shore) and Adonis Brosteanu’s Necrophosis. The first-person horror adventure is currently in development for Steam and the Nintendo Switch, and much like Scorn, has more than a few nods to the dystopian surrealism of Zdzisław Beksiński.
Touting itself as “a mystical puzzle adventure set in a surreal universe”, Necrophosis takes place in an unknown realm where everything is dead and decayed. You wake up to a mysterious figure presenting himself as your guide to this harsh world. Players will go through “a mysterious and macabre series of events”, coming face to face with horrific entities and mind-bending puzzles, where “the boundaries between reality and hellish visions blur into a haunting tapestry of dread.” Each location features its own theme, puzzles, and integral characters, interconnected in a non-linear fashion.
As you progress, you’ll unlock hidden realms and abilities, and encounter “a myriad of chilling sights, urging you to fathom the unfathomable.” Each location will be presented “like a sinister puzzle box” and feature their own set of unique mechanics, accompanied with narrations and famous poems. If that’s not enough, players will encounter Lovecraftian themes and entities from the Lovecraftian universe on their journey.
