‘Unnie’ – Hong Won-Ki To Helm K-Pop Thriller “In The Vein of ‘Black Swan'”

Goedam and Zombie Hunter director Hong Won-ki is set to helm Unnie, a thriller described to be “in the vein of Black Swan” and set in the comptetitive world of K-pop, Deadline reports today.

Unnie is based on the 2023 Black List script from Lynn Q. Yu.

Casting is underway and production is slated to begin in Seoul and Los Angeles this January, under new genre label Badlands. Per Deadline,Badlands’ Scott Strauss, Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, Renegade Capital’s Andrew Schwartzberg and Jon Shiffman, and Desert Bloom’s Jennice Lee will produce, with popular K-pop artists Sunshine and Moonshine creating an original soundtrack for the film.

Plot details are currently scarce, but Hong Won-ki is no stranger to blending K-pop and horror. Netflix’s horror anthology series Goedam is based on popular Korean urban legends that feature current and former K-pop idols. If that’s not enough, Hong Won-ki videographer Kim Jun-hong are behind Zanybros, the #1 music video production company in South Korea and played a role in K-pop’s worldwide success, having shot over 1500 music videos.

Badlands’ Strauss told the outlet, “After meeting the Zanybros in Korea, it became clear they are uniquely plugged into the K-pop world and will deliver on the authenticity its fans demand. Director Hong’s eye-popping videos and passion for genre make him the only choice for our film.”

Unnie is the latest horror film that seems centered around the world of pop music and music venues; Trap is set to spring into theaters next month with Smile 2 in October.

Stay tuned for additional details on Unnie as they arrive.
