Netflix has just announced its complete Fall 2024 lineup, giving us premiere dates for a small handful of horror movies coming to the streaming service this Halloween season.
Netflix previews in an official statement, “Netflix is firing up a new slate of thrilling titles just in time for autumn, and you’re invited to sit down and warm up. So turn on the TV and take a peek at your options — there are plenty of new movies just around the corner this fall.”
Here are the horror highlights from Netflix’s Fall 2024 schedule…
IT’S WHAT’S INSIDE – OCTOBER 4
Fresh off the film’s premiere at Sundance earlier this year, Netflix opened up their check book and shelled out a whopping $17 million to acquire worldwide rights to It’s What’s Inside.
Oscar nominee Colman Domingo is an Exec Producer on It’s What’s Inside, the thriller that drew raves at Sundance and SXSW for its blindsiding twists, breakneck turns and incredible cast performances. The film marks the feature directorial debut of writer/director Greg Jardin, who’s earning kudos for his creative and fearless choices.
In the upcoming horror movie from Netflix, “A group of friends gather for a pre-wedding party that descends into an existential nightmare when an estranged friend arrives with a mysterious game that awakens long-hidden secrets, desires, and grudges.”
Brittany O’Grady, James Morosini, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Gavin Leatherwood, Reina Hardesty, and Nina Bloomgarden star in the genre-bending movie.
Meagan Navarro writes in her Sundance review for BD, “Its irreverent tone and Jardin’s visual eye ensure a highly entertaining time, though it becomes prone to tangled knots.”
“The director pulls from his music video background for a vivacious, eye-catching feature that dazzles and lures you further into the tangled abyss, even as many of its central players frustrate,” Meagan continues. “Even still, It’s What’s Inside is pure fun. Moreover, it’s extremely funny. Jardin assembles an ensemble willing to push their frequently and intentionally insufferable characters past the point of insanity for our entertainment. On that front, Jardin’s debut is a stunning success. It’s a twisty puzzle box that demands your attention.”
Meagan adds, “Not all the pieces fully come together, but Jardin’s ambitious debut will easily earn a devout following for its creative setup and commitment to bonkers fun.”
THE PLATFORM 2 – OCTOBER 4
Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia’s The Platform was a massive hit for Netflix when it debuted back in 2020, and the director returns for The Platform 2 this coming Halloween season.
Milena Smit and Hovik Keuchkerian star in the new sequel.
Netflix previews, “As a mysterious leader imposes their rule in the Platform, a new resident becomes embroiled in the battle against this controversial method to fight the brutal feeding system. But when eating from the wrong plate becomes a death sentence, how far would you be willing to go to save your life?”
The first film is set inside a vertical prison system, where inmates are assigned to a level and forced to ration food from a platform that moves between the floors. Inmates on high floors eat better than those below, and one man tries to effect change so everyone gets enough.
Rafael reviewed The Platform for us at TIFF, raving in his 4.5-star write-up: “The Platform takes full advantage of its isolated setting and small cast to instead focus on a high concept, a tight script, and sharp dialogue that will make you laugh as often as it will make you think. This is a funny, heartfelt, at times disgusting, yet also thought-provoking sci-fi thriller that reminds of Bong Joon-ho’s Snowpiercer, but with way better food.”
The Platform also made Daniel Kurland’s Best International Horror Films of 2020 list.
THE SHADOW STRAYS – OCTOBER 17
Indonesian auteur Timo Tjahjanto (The Night Comes for Us, May the Devil Take You, V/H/S/94) is back with new movie The Shadow Strays, being billed as an action-thriller.
In The Shadow Strays, “Codename 13, a 17-year-old trained assassin, is under suspension because of a sloppy mission in Japan. The girl built a conscience when she met Monji, an 11-year-old boy who lost his mother to a crime syndicate.
“When Monji is captured, 13 is hell-bent on setting a path of destruction to rescue the boy, including going against her mentor and the organization that hires her, the Shadow.”
The cast includes Aurora Ribero, Hana Malasan, Taskya Namya, Agra Piliang, Andri Mashadi, Adinia Wirasti, Nobuyuki Suzuki, Tanta Ginting, Ali Fikry, and Kin Wah Chew.
WOMAN OF THE HOUR – OCTOBER 18
In 1978, a serial killer appeared on live TV as a bachelor on The Dating Game. Director (and star) Anna Kendrick tells the tale in Woman of the Hour, a based-on-true-events thriller.
Netflix previews the upcoming festival hit, “The stranger-than-fiction story of an aspiring actor in 1970s Los Angeles and a serial killer in the midst of a yearslong murder spree, whose lives intersect when they’re cast on an episode of The Dating Game.”
Meagan Navarro explains in her four-star review for Bloody Disgusting, “Anna Kendrick takes aim at the true crime serial killer story in her feature directorial debut, Woman of the Hour. A charming, kitschy ’70s set exploration of gender dynamics quickly gives way to an unnerving, suspenseful stranger-than-fiction tale of serial killer and rapist Rodney Alcala and his bizarre appearance as a bachelor on “The Dating Game.” Kendrick’s incisive vision, blending horror and humor with nonlinear storytelling, makes for an unshakable debut.
“Kendrick pulls double duty for her debut, also starring as Cheryl Bradshaw, a struggling actress trying to carve out a career in California. Cheryl’s failed attempts to win over casting directors and gently rebuff her pushy neighbor put her at her wit’s end. That’s when her agent decides to land her a spot as the bachelorette on the popular live TV show “The Dating Game.” But it’s not just the typical stressors and anxieties of getting thrust into a live show with overbearing personalities to worry about; one of the eligible bachelors on her episode happens to be brazen killer Rodney Alcala (Daniel Zovatto) in the midst of a ruthless murder spree.”
Meagan raves, “Kendrick’s directorial debut dazzles with its incisive commentary, and the first-time director demonstrates clever instincts in knowing when to weaponize dark humor and when to let the dramatic moments breathe for maximum impact. Kendrick tosses out some of the more familiar serial killer conventions, and yet nothing is lost in terms of intensity and nerve-fraying sequences. It makes for an authentic, poignant, and unsettling debut.”
Nicolette Robinson and Autumn Best also star.
Ian MacAllister McDonald wrote Woman of the Hour, a Black List script that had previously been optioned – but ultimately ditched – by Netflix. The film has truly come full circle.
FAMILY PACK – OCTOBER 23
In the board game The Werewolves of Millers Hollow, inspired by Werewolf, paranoia and mistrust ensues as players seek to uncover the hidden identity of a werewolf in their midst. Coming to Netflix in October, French comedy Family Pack adapts the horror board game.
François Uzan (“Lupin”) helms the family-friendly feature.
In the film, “After discovering a mysterious card game, a family is thrust back in time to a medieval village where they must fend off dangerous werewolves each night.”
Franck Dubosc, Jean Reno, and Suzanne Clément star.
DON’T MOVE – OCTOBER 25
Up next from producer Sam Raimi‘s Raimi Productions and Hammerstone Studios (Barbarian) is Don’t Move, which Netflix has freshly dated for October 25 this week.
Adam Schindler and Brian Netto (Quibi’s horror series “50 States of Fright”) directed Don’t Move. T.J. Cimfel and David White (Intruders) wrote the screenplay.
“A grieving woman hoping to find solace deep in an isolated forest encounters a stranger who injects her with a paralytic agent. As the agent gradually takes over her body, she must run, hide, and fight for her life before her entire nervous system shuts down.”
Kelsey Asbille, Finn Wittrock, Moray Treadwell, and Daniel Francis star.
Sam Raimi recently said in a statement of his own, “I am delighted to collaborate again with our co-directors Adam and Brian on this incredibly frightening and tense story full of so many twists and turns – it will deliver a fantastic horror punch to the audience!”
TIME CUT – OCTOBER 30
The writer and director of slasher-comedy Freaky are reuniting for a brand new time-traveling slasher movie titled Time Cut, with Christopher Landon producing and Michael Kennedy writing the script alongside Hanna Macpherson (“Into the Dark”). MacPherson also directs Time Cut, which has been described as “Back to the Future meets Scream.”
In the upcoming slasher, premiering on Netflix for Halloween Eve, “A teenage girl travels back to the early 2000s to stop a vicious killer from murdering her sister.”
Madison Bailey (Outer Banks) and Antonia Gentry (Ginny & Georgia) star alongside Michael Shanks, Griffin Gluck, Rachael Crawford, Jordan Pettle, Megan Best, Samuel Braun, Sydney Sabiston, and Kataem O’Connor.
