Horror Icon Tony Todd Passes Away at age 69

Sleep well Candyman.

We have extremely unfortunate news to pass along as we have learned that Candyman himself, Tony Todd, has passed away at the age of 69.

A true icon in the horror genre, Todd played one of the greatest slashers of all time with the release of Candyman in 1992. He would go on to reprise that role numerous times throughout his career.

Prior to becoming Candyman he played a hero, Ben, in the remake of George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead in 1990.

Todd would further solidify himself as a genre icon by appearing in The Crow and playing William Bludworth in the Final Destination series.

His co-star in Candman, Virginia Madsen took to Instagram shortly after the news broke to post a heartfelt post which can be seen below. The post said “A truly poetic man. A voice that made it easy to swoon. Thanks to Bernard Rose, we really created a gothic romance. It’s why the film lives on. A gentle soul with a deep knowledge of the arts. He enjoyed the fans and was  never shy when it came to fans approaching, wanting photos. A rare actor who allowed himself to be open to the public attention. Wish I had seen him on the stage. I will miss him so much and hope he haunts me once in a while. But I will not summon him in the mirror! What a gift that Jordon Peele let us live again as lovers. He talked about a prequel using technology so that we, ourselves could tell the tale of how their love began. Imagine that. I do. My dear friend Tony, I do.“

In addition to his horror roles, Todd is well known for his work in Platoon, Star Trek, The Rock, The Man from Earth, Masters of the Universe: Revolution, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, 24, and many more.

Todd was slated to be a guest at CT HorrorFest 2024 in Hartford, CT but unfortunately had to pull out due to health issues.

The staff of Horror News Network send our deepest condolences to Mr. Todd’s family and friends during this difficult time.
