Resident Evil fans have been dealing with no-shows in regards to Resident Evil 9 with the big gaming events this year, despite the plethora of rumours circulating around. The latest crop comes courtesy of Andy at Biohazard Declassified (with JJ from Residence of Evil doing the reporting in the video below), who says that the latest batch of leaks was relayed by a playtester who claims to have played an early build of the game sometime in April and September in Japan.
Obviously, with stuff like this, it pays to keep your grain of salt handy. None of this has been officially confirmed (obviously) by Capcom or anyone on the Resident Evil 9 team. Plus, these rumours do venture into spoiler territory. So, here we go.
According to Andy, Resident Evil 9 will take place 4 years after the main game of Resident Evil Village, and not the Shadows of Rose DLC. The story will apparently focus on Leon and Jill traveling to an island to investigate the company that created Eveline in Resident Evil 7, who are now creating mass clones of the bioweapon Eveline using the Megamycete provided by Miranda from Resident Evil Village.
Drawing a bit from Resident Evil 4, Jill and Leon will become infected by the Megamycete and will experience hallucinations and hear Eveline’s voice throughout the game. Not only that, but there will be someone stalking Leon throughout the game, while Jill will be hunted by what’s referred to as the “Goat-Man.”
Locations for RE9 include an abandoned hospital, caves, deserted houses, labs, dark forests, and a temple. The main enemy will be an evolved zombie that sounds similar to the Ganados from Resident Evil 4 Remake.
The main villain for the game will be a man named Mr. Simon, a completely new character who supervises the mass production of bioweapons on the island. Blue Umbrella will also return as the “good guys.”
As you’ve probably guessed, Leon Kennedy and Jill Valentine will return as the main playable protagonists. They will, however, be joined by Chris Redfield and Barry Burton as supporting characters through radio calls.
Speaking of Jill, her appearance will resemble her look from the Lost in Nightmares DLC from Resident Evil 5, while Leon will appear similar to his look in Resident Evil: Damnation. Age-wise, Jill will remain the same, but Leon will have a more grizzled, rough look.
Once again, this is all just based on rumours. There’s hope that Capcom will at least drop some new info (read: a teaser) at The Game Awards 2024 next month, but even that is speculation. As is always the case, we’ll just have to wait and keep expectations in check.
