‘Scanners III: The Takeover’ Is a Cautionary Tale of Female Empowerment [The Lady Killers Podcast]

“You will obey without hesitation, my every command.”

Do women belong in positions of power? We’ve been taught to believe that the “gentler sex” is regulated by emotion and not to be trusted with important decisions. After all, what’s to stop her from becoming hysterical and pushing a button that destroys the world? Maybe the glass ceiling exists for a reason.

While reductive and infuriating, this ideology has been fueling patriarchal oppression for centuries. We’re threatened by women with unchecked power and many older films seemingly exist to reinforce this message. At first glance Christian Duguay’s Scanners III: The Takeover feels like a cautionary tale about the dangers of allowing women to take control. But has this larger-than-life story and its fabulous villain aged into a tale of female empowerment?

Helena Monet (Liliana Komorowska) is a Scanner tormented by painful headaches and intrusive thoughts. Adopted by a wealthy entrepreneur, she’s grown up in the lap of luxury, but cannot work due to this constant pain. When her father promises an experimental cure, Helena takes the drug regardless of its potential side effects. This patch not only cures her constant pain, it seems to remove her inhibitions, creating a powerful woman with a thirst for power.

Seemingly unstoppable, Helena takes control of her father’s company and begins mass production of this wonder drug. Discovering a talent for mental domination, sets her sights on a larger prize. But does her twin scanner brother have the ability to take her down? And does his gender make him the rightful heir to their father’s company?

In the latest episode of Bloody FM’s The Lady Killers Podcast, co-hosts Jenn Adams, Sammie Kuykendall, Rocco Thompson, and Mae Shults rhapsodize over this intoxicating lady killer while untangling the details of her strange story. Do we blame Helena for taking this experimental drug? Are sparks flying between this glamorous CEO and her lady scientist? Does Alex (Steve Parrish) actually have a personality and what does “naked nasty” even mean?

Join the Lady Killers for a slightly unhinged holiday episode honoring an enigmatic killer we would love to befriend.
