Bundy Who? Gary Ridgway Was the Other Serial Killer in the Pacific North West [Murder Made Fiction Podcast]

We spent the month of December discussing different adaptations of Ted Bundy on Murder Made Fiction – starting with a primer (listen) before tackling Matthew Bright’s 2002 film (listen). Then we moved on to Zac Efron’s Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile (listen) and Chad Michael Murray’s Ted Bundy: American Boogeyman (listen).

While we’re not quite done with “Ted” yet, Jenn and I are expanding the discussion. It turns out there was another man killing women in the same place (the Pacific Northwest) at the same time (the early 80s). This overlap, which includes a similar MO, was obviously confusing for the police, created a substantial public outcry, and made catching a new perp all the more difficult.

The biggest difference? Bundy was ultimately apprehended after only a few years, whereas Gary Ridgway, AKA the Green River Killer, wasn’t caught for nearly twenty years (!)

So who was the man who killed 49 women, many of them sex workers and teen runaways? Is it possible he actually killed as many as 80? And why couldn’t the police catch him? You’ll have to listen to find out!

Episode 23: Gary Ridgway Primer: The Green River Killer

Who was the Green River Killer? How does his story intersect with Ted Bundy and why is he infinitely less famous? Find out as Joe tells Jenn all about prolific serial killer Gary Ridgway.

Next week: We’re looking at one of the few adaptations of the case. The Capture of the Green River Killer is a three-hour Lifetime miniseries starring Ed‘s Tom Cavannagh and spread across two parts (both Part 1 and Part 2 are available on YouTube)

Want even more Murder Made Fiction? Be sure to check out the pod’s Patreon feed, where we have 29 hours of bonus content, including full-length primers on Bundy, Ed Gein, Jeffrey Dahmer and more, as well as individual episodes on Peacock’s new plane hijacking drama Lockerbie, as well as Black Sunday titles like Spielberg’s Munich and September 5.
