Nominees for the 25th annual Game Developers Choice Awards (GDCA) have been announced, and sadly, much like The Game Awards last month, horror isn’t as well represented as many would like. Still, the likes of Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, Lorelei and the Laser Eyes, Pacific Drive and Mouthwashing are up for awards, while many genre titles have been given the “Honourable Mentions” nod.
Taking place at this year’s Game Developers Conference (GDC) on March 19, the Game Developers Choice Awards is the leading peer-based video game event celebrating the industry’s top games and developers, celebrating the top games from the past year, as well as the developers who created them. The awards are nominated by, voted on, and decided by video game developers within the industry.
Leading the way this year are Team ASOBI’s Astro Bot and Game Science’s Black Myth: Wukong with seven nominations each, including nods for Game of the Year. Genre fare is also in the running, thanks to Arrowhead Game Studios’ Helldivers 2, which is also nominated in the Best Technology category.
Speaking of Best Technology, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II is also up for that award, as well as Best Audio. Meanwhile, Mouthwashing is up for Best Narrative, while Lorelei and the Laser Eyes has a nomination for Best Design, and Pacific Drive is nominated for Best Debut.
As for the Honourable Mentions, horror and genre titles get some attention thanks to Bloober Team’s Silent Hill 2 (Best Audio), and Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree (Best Visual Art).
Yes, it’s a bit of a bummer that titles like Resident Evil 4, Diablo IV and A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead weren’t given some love. But, we do have a silver lining, thanks to The Horror Game Awards, which did see Silent Hill 2 get the recognition it deserves from fans.
