‘Helldivers’ Film Adaptation Announced

Sony Pictures is getting ready to spread democracy to the big screen with Arrowhead Game Studios’ Helldivers 2. Announced during Sony’s CES 2025 press conference, the Helldivers film will be a collaboration between Sony Productions and Sony Pictures.

PlayStation Productions head Asad Qizilbash made the announcement during the event, but offered little else in terms of details.

Of course, fans know that Helldivers 2 is heavily inspired by Paul Verhoeven‘s classic 1997 action film Starship Troopers. Similiar to Starship Troopers, Helldivers 2 sees soldiers fo the 22nd century defending Super Earth and its managed democracy (aka an authoritarian government) against alien insects called Terminids, as well as robots called Automatons. It’s all done in the name of “spreading democracy”.

Recently, with the Illuminate update, the game has a third faction to fight in the eponymous Illuminate, an ancient and technologically advanced alien race thought to be extinct, but has now returned and invaded Super Earth’s colonies.

Since its release last February, Helldivers 2 is the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game of all time, having sold 12 million copies in just 12 weeks across the PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam. Helldivers 2 also earned Best Multiplayer Game and Best Ongoing Game at The Game Awards 2024.

Heck, if you’ve been asleep since the game’s launch, Aaron has you covered with his impressions of the game.
