One of the films that managed to break out at the box office at a time when the major studios weren’t releasing their movies in theaters, IFC Midnight’s creature feature The Wretched made headlines with a $4 million worldwide box office haul back in 2020, with much of the film’s success coming from the drive-in circuit. Now five years later, a sequel is taking shape!
Variety reports this afternoon that directors Brett and Drew Pierce are returning to direct The Wretched 2, with production on the sequel kicking off in September of this year.
The brothers tell Variety, “Independent horror has been staking out its claim at the box office in the last couple of years with films like Terrifier 3 and Late Night With the Devil, and audiences are craving more from these original stories and voices. It just seems like the right time to bring our Witch back as she was born out of us wanting more from our creature features that we just weren’t getting.”
They tease, “We’re going to push this story and the body horror into uncomfortable places.”
In the original movie, a teenage boy, struggling with his parent’s imminent divorce, faces off with a thousand year-old witch who is living beneath the skin of the woman next door.
And in the upcoming sequel The Wretched 2, “a small-town deputy is pulled into a rash of missing children’s cases only to discover that the skin-changing Wretch is back and has been preying upon the families of his community for a century.”
If you missed The Wretched back in 2020, you can stream the film on Shudder now.
