It was announced back in November of last year that Toho and director Takashi Yamazaki (Godzilla Minus One) are re-teaming for the next Godzilla movie, with Yamazaki handling the VFX as well as writing and directing the Godzilla Minus One follow-up. At the Visual Effects Society Awards on Tuesday, the filmmaker provided an update on the project.
Variety notes in their recap, “The filmmaker – who accepted the Society’s Visionary Award – also confirmed that he’s currently working on the screenplay and storyboards for the new Godzilla movie.” Additionally, the outlet reports, Yamazaki indicated at the event that he expects to be provided with a bigger production budget than he had for Godzilla Minus One.
Made for just $15 million, the VFX spectacle Godzilla Minus One became the highest-grossing Japanese film in US box office history, earning more than $115 million at the global box office. Winner of the Academy Award® for Best Visual Effects, it’s the first film in Godzilla’s 70-year franchise history to be recognized by the Academy with a nomination or win.
The next Godzilla movie from Toho doesn’t yet have a title or synopsis, so we have no idea at this time if it will be a sequel to Godzilla Minus One or a new story entirely. Stay tuned.
Takashi Yamazaki will also be directing a movie titled Grandgear for Bad Robot Productions, which will mark the Japanese filmmaker’s first English-language feature film.
Plot details for Sony’s Grandgear, at this time, are completely under wraps.
