‘Death of a Unicorn’ Director Alex Scharfman On Creating His Horned Beasts

Death of a unicorn

Death of a Unicorn writer and director Alex Scharfman may not have grown up loving unicorns, but boy, does he love them now. While writing the script for his feature film debut, he essentially became a certified fantasy horse girl as he spent months researching unicorn lore, reading book after book about the fantastical beast. And it’s paying off with the upcoming release of the genre-bending film that’s one wild ride.

In the new A24 horror-comedy:

A father (Paul Rudd) and daughter (Jenna Ortega) accidentally hit and kill a unicorn while en route to a weekend retreat, where his billionaire boss (Richard E. Grant) seeks to exploit the creature’s miraculous curative properties.

We spoke with Scharfman about unicorn research, creature features, and the enduring power of The Last Unicorn.

Death of a Unicorn comes to theaters on March 28, 2025.
