‘Eyes Never Wake’ Puts Your Webcam to Terrifying Use [Trailer]

There seems to be an underlying creepiness with games that use your webcam as part of the gameplay experience, and that’s not lost on solo dev Allan “Hederlunden” Hedlund. Their upcoming title Eyes Never Wake aims to jump on that creepiness and use it to terrifying effect.

Currently in development on PC for Steam, Eyes Never Wake uses various webcam and fourth-wall-breaking interactions to create an immersive horror experience where your real-world actions matter. The game involves you exploring the game’s world while being hunted by a monster, which has an odd fixation with seeing your face. Obviously, you don’t want to have that happen.

The monster’s AI takes advantage of your webcam and microphone to see and hear you, requiring you to physically duck beneath your desk in real life to hide when you’re being chased. Every corner you turn is a chance for it to catch you. Listen closely, stay quiet, and be ready to hide your face at all costs. There are also times where you’ll clip out into a mysterious out-of-bounds area (hence the fourth-wall-breaking) to explore. Your goal is to uncover the truth behind this abandoned game and why “heaven” is so deeply hidden.

If things are too intense, you can always turn off the webcam mechanic in the settings at any time. And yes, if you’re worried, Eyes Never Wake states on its Steam page that it uses your webcam for gameplay purposes only. All of the processing happens locally, and no images, videos, or data is collected or sent anywhere.
