“I can’t wait to kill you.”
We’re all familiar with the slasher killer. Usually male, this tall and imposing monster stalks his victims with phallic weapons while covering his face with an iconic mask. From Michael Myers’ “The Shape” to Ghostface’s billowing robes, we’ve become accustomed to fearing these hulking beasts when we see them approaching an unsuspecting victim.
What we’re not prepared for is a slasher killer in the body of a teenage girl. Christopher Landon subverts this decades-old archetype with his 2020 film Freaky. By remixing classic slasher tropes with the patterns of a teen body swap comedy, Landon and screenwriter Michael Kennedy deliver a surprisingly empathetic exploration of gender and strength.
Millie (Kathryn Newton) is a shy high school student who’s just lost her father. Struggling to connect with her grieving mother, she leans on friends Nyla (Celeste O’Connor) and Josh (Misha Osherovich) for emotional support. But waiting alone near the football field, she’s attacked by a legendary killer known as the Blissfield Butcher (Vince Vaughn). When a freak bolt of lightning meets an ancient dagger, the two find themselves trapped in each others’ bodies. Now Millie and her friends must find a way to switch them back before they’re stuck in each others’ bodies forever.
