‘Hell of a Summer’ Directors Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk Talk Their Take On The Summer Camp Slasher

With their feature film debut Hell of a Summer, directors Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk tapped into the iconic summer camp slasher to show the world what they’re made of. At the center of their film is Fred Hechinger, who plays human golden retriever Jason, a 24-year-old manchild who refuses to confront the reality of adulthood. So, he heads to camp as a fun-loving counselor. But it all crumbles when counselors start showing up dead…

But Wolfhard and Bryk aren’t just behind the camera. They take on roles as best friends and stepbrothers Chris (Wolfhard) and Bobby (Bryk), two rich boys with a nice car (borrowed from Bobby’s dad) who can’t wait to score this summer. Their relationship is endearing, and their anxious energy is a perfect foil to Jason’s own never-ending naive sunshine.
